From Crib to Creativity: Transforming a Toy Crib into Functional Decor.
1. The Chalkboard with Keyholder
One of the crib’s most recognizable features was its backboard, which had just the right shape and size to become a chalkboard and keyholder for my kitchen.
Prepping the Surface: I cleaned the backboard, filled holes with wood putty from removed hardware and sanded the backboard to remove shiny finish so paint would adhere.
Painting the Surface: I then painted the surface with a turquoise chalky paint, and after it dried, I taped off the area I then painted with a chalkboard paint finish, 2 coats to ensuring it would be easy to write on and clean.
Functional Additions: To make it even more useful, I cut the brass colored rods from the crib, the length of the bottom of the backboard. I then purchased and placed the mounting brackets to the base legs of the backboard to secure the rod in place. I also purchased small “S” hooks to hang on the rod and be perfect for holding keys and small essentials organized. For my final step, I attached picture hooks to the back, so I could hang my unique chalkboard keyholder on the wall.
Final Placement: Now, it hangs proudly in my kitchen, serving as a stylish and practical daily reminder board!
2. A Festive Wall Hanging from a Side Rail
Next, I turned my focus to one of the side rails—a structure with plenty of visual interest that could be upcycled into a fun holiday wall decor piece.
Painting Magic: To create a rustic, vintage feel, after sanding, I applied white crackle paint over black chalk paint, bringing out aged textures that complemented the Christmas theme.
Decorative Touches: I adorned the piece with a sweet snowman, Christmas ornaments and greenery, capturing a festive spirit.
Wall Hooks Addition: With hooks installed, my seasonal decor is ready to be displayed. I now a perfect spot where I hang it each year during the holiday season.
3. The Hanging Magnetic Board for My Workshop
The second backboard from the crib found its new purpose in my workspace, turning into a hanging magnetic board for notes, reminders, and even small tools.
Preparation & Painting Magic: I cleaned, wood puttied, and sanded the backboard. I then painted it with black chalk paint.
Repurposing the Surface: I modified the board to hold magnets, by cutting a thin sheet of galvanized steel I purchased at Michael’s Craft Shop and then placed it within the inset area and glued it onto the backboard, making it easy to magnets to hold important notes.
Practical Use: It’s now an essential addition to my workshop, keeping me organized while I create.
Final Thoughts: The Beauty of Upcycling
Through these projects, I realized how much joy comes from rethinking old materials, giving them a fresh purpose, and celebrating creativity. Whether it’s furniture redesign, repurposing forgotten objects, or simply experimenting with techniques like painting and engraving, upcycling always has something special to offer.
